roundabout . . . a curatorial collaboration

Justin Wonnacott selected Lorraine as the next person in the exhibition, Justin wrote this about her:

listening . . . "I chose Lorraine Gilbert because, despite the obvious differences in our work; I think we have a lot in common. Although many people have dropped off the radar of my photographic life, Lorraine's work continues to grow and flourish since I first saw some of her pictures two decades ago. Photography has changed a lot since then and I don't personally know many photographers whose work has been as interesting or relevant to me for so long. Since I first saw her photographs, I realize that her pictures have quietly taught me about many of the same things I worry about as a photographer too. I admire the lack of pretense in her art and its basis in personal experience. It maintains a sense of discovery and play, I appreciate how she solves formal problems in a straightforward practical manner and most importantly, how her work hasdeveloped into a focused look at herself, her medium and their combined relationship to nature and the world at large in a way that is informed by an obvious love for art and its history. She is a committed teacher and a prosyletizer for the idea of photography who I have often have used as an inspiration for my own students. I have chosen someone whose work is exemplary and that I trust to make a valuable selection of the next artist to come."
