Shelter is one of the three basic necessities for sustaining life, Support
Systems is a visual link to two specific forms of shelter. Trees and columns
are twin metaphors that have come down through history, the cultural meaning
only seemingly lost but with the ancient roots firmly intact. The purpose of
the work is to reconstruct an ethic of compassion through the visual metaphor
of support and shelter. The column originally came from the Mission, a shelter,
situated across the street from the site of Support Systems.
